Hundreds of millions of people around the world suffer from chronic lung disease.  Diseases such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are becoming increasingly common and are only partially treatable, but not curable. Patients with lung disease are severely limited in all aspects of their lives from breathing difficulties and endure enormous suffering.  Although risk factors for lung diseases such as air pollution and smoking are well known, it is still unclear how and why the organic changes leading to lung disease occur and what environmental and genetic factors influence disease.
